To understand what is the Nobel Peace Prize, first you have to know about Alfred Nobel. Nobel is the creator of the Nobel Peace Prize and was a Swedish inventor that died in 1896. He left his fortune behind to be used for prizes. One of these was the Nobel Peace Prize.

The first Nobel Peace Prize was awarded in 1901. Alfred Nobel left behind a will giving the criteria that a person has to meet to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. His will states that they “shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by a group of five people called the Norwegian Nobel Committee. This organization doesn’t reveal information concerning the nominees for the prize or their names until 50 years after the prize has been awarded.
