Walmart (WMT) Joins the Cage-Free Eggs Trend

Walmart (NYSE:WMT) has announced that the company has pledged to eventually only carry cage-free eggs.

The retailer is joining restaurants and grocery stores such as Krispy KremeSupervaluMcDonald’s, Dunkin’ Donuts and Taco Bell in doing so.

Walmart will fully support the practice of carrying eggs from hens that are not caged and have access to the outdoors by 2025. The move will apply to more than 5,000 of its stores in the U.S., including its Sam’s Club warehouse chain.

The retailer will be pushing its suppliers to meet the “five principles” of animal welfare, which have include giving the animals space to move, keeping them well-fed and ensuring they do not suffer mental distress.

WMT stock is up 0.4% Wednesday.
