Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) has announced that it won’t be shutting down in 2017.

Twitter, TWTR, Shutting Down, #SaveTwitterA rumor somehow got started that the social media website was going to shut down and it resulted in the creation of the hashtag #SaveTwitter. The hashtag was used 100,000 times as users launched a campaign to save the social media service.

Despite the good intentions of the social media company’s users sharing the hashtag, they only succeeded in spreading the false rumor. TWTR came out with its own statement on the matter saying that there is “absolutely no truth to the claims whatsoever,” reports CNBC.

It’s believed that the #SaveTwitter hashtag got its start from a YouTube user called “BradTheLadLong.” The rumor claims he collected all the hateful messages sent to him through the social media service and used them to convince charities and activist to rally against the site. While TWTR has been working to stop abuse, it’s not going to shut down its service over it.

Here is what some Twitter users were saying about the #SaveTwitter hashtag campaign.

  • “People who believe Twitter will shutdown in 2017, are the same people who thought the world will end in 2012 ? #SaveTwitter”
  • “If they actually shut Twitter down I don’t know what ill do with my life #savetwitter”
  • “When u realise dat if Twitter shuts down u will have to actually leave the house and talk to people #savetwitter”
  • “There’s no need to #SaveTwitter because it’s not shutting down”
  • “?? Just found out Twitter might end next year #savetwitter my life will be over without twitter ?? “
