Tiger Woods has announced that he will not be playing at the Safeway Open.
The 40-year-old golfer is working hard to make his comeback in the professional stage, but he needs more time to train before returning to a big tournament. In his website, the athlete commented on the matter, explaining the motivation behind his move.
Woods believes that the Turkey competition is coming up to soon, and he will also have to miss the PGA Tour, which he has won a staggering 79 times. He said that he feels strong but his game has too many weaknesses at the moment.
The golfer apologized to his fans for letting them down, as well as Safeway Inc (NYSE:SWY), Turkish Airlines and his viewers in California and Turkey.
“I spent a week with the U.S. Ryder Cup Team, an honor and experience that inspired me even more to play,” he said. “I practiced the last several days in California, but after a lot of hours, I knew I wasn’t ready to compete against the best golfers in the world.”
There is a silver lining to the matter as Woods will play in his foundation’s upcoming event, the Hero World Challenge in Albany. Woods has donated his winnings to a charity in the past.
The athlete was once the world’s most recognizable brands in sports, winning 14 major tournaments between 1997 and 2007. He is hoping to win another one before he goes 10 years without a major trophy.
