Apple Inc. Rumors – Apple Store Says Prepare for ‘Big’ Event, Mum on Details

Here are Apple Inc. (AAPL) stock news and rumors for Thursday, July 15. Today, Apple’s got 99 problems, and the iPhone 4 accounts for all but one of them. Meanwhile, Apple Store retail outlets tell employees to prepare for something “big.”

iPhone 4 Bluetooth problems reported: Looks like the AAPL’s iPhone 4 can’t even get dated wireless technology right. While the reports from TUAW.com are isolated at the moment, that blog’s tests of the Jawbone Icon wireless Bluetooth headset used with an iPhone 4 have shown a number of technical issues not experienced when using the same headset with an iPhone 3GS. The big issue described is muffled sound. Meanwhile, Apple’s discussion forums are filling up with reports of other Bluetooth headsets made by manufacturers other than Aliph working just as poorly with the iPhone 4. A spokesperson from the Jawbone manufacturer acknowledged the reports of trouble with Apple’s new smartphone: ” We are aware of and concerned with the user frustration surrounding the issues affecting all Bluetooth devices (headsets, car kits, and speakers) connecting to the iPhone 4 and iOS4 updated phones. We know users have come to expect the freedom of hands-free and we are working night and day with our partners, Apple and AT&T, to resolve the issues as quickly as possible.”

Apple Tells Retail Employees to Prepare for Something “Big”: Last week, AAPL gave out $150 bonuses to many employees at Apple Store retail outlets. The bonuses were given because of company-wide discontent over employee access to iPhone 4s on the June 24th launch date. Retail employees got no preferential treatment whatsoever, having to preorder and then wait for an iPhone 4 like everyone else, despite having to work 12 hour shifts during the product’s release. Now, Apple is telling those same employees to prepare for a “big” announcement. In a news bulletin circulated internally at Apple Retail, employees were treated to a series of video clips teasing an announcement. What’s on the horizon? The rumored smaller iPad? The mythical Verizon iPhone? According to blogger Gary Allen, whose ifoAppleStore blog is devoted to Apple Retail coverage, think it’s likely to be an unveiling of the Products + app. InvestorPlace reported on the instant product research app, that will allow customers to scan products with their mobile devices, last week.

iPhone 4 antenna issues costing Apple $200 million per week: RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky estimates that the severe problems with the iPhone 4’s antenna are going to cost AAPL a whole lot more than yesterday’s 4% dip in price per share. Abramsky predicts that Apple will have to resolve the problem in one of three ways. The first, providing all iPhone 4 owners with free protective cases, will cost AAPL $45 million. The more PR friendly alternative, repairing each of the nearly 3 million iPhone 4s sold, would cost the company $300 million. The worst case scenario, a full product recall, will cost AAPL $900 million. Abramsky also estimates that each week the iPhone 4 continues to sell and Apple doesn’t institute a permanent solution will ultimately cost the company an additional $200 million.
