Apple rumors and AAPL stock news for July 13th, 2010

Here is today’s Apple (AAPL) stock news and rumors. Tuesday has a solid selection of Apple murmurings and announcements beyond tar-and-featherings from consumer reports, including the announcement of the Safari Extensions Gallery, BMW support of iOS 4 functionality, and rumors about a brand new smaller iPad in time for Christmas:

Smaller iPad for Holiday 2010: When you’ve already released the most popular and successful piece of new consumer technology in 2010, what is there left to do with your year? If you’re AAPL, you release an even smaller, sleeker model. The big rumor running around the campfire this Tuesday is that Apple will release a new smaller version of its popular iPad tablet computer this autumn, just in time for the holiday consumer rush. DigiTimes’s sources say that the new iPad will feature 5.6-inch and 7-inch OLED displays, making it markedly smaller than the current model whose screen comes in at 9.7-inches. Compal Electronics is the rumored supplier for the OLED screens rather than Samsung, who is having significant difficulty producing enough OLED displays for their own line of products. Prior to the iPad’s April launch, it was believed that the device would feature an OLED screen rather than the IPS-enabled LCD screen used by the current model.

Apple to Launch Safari Extensions Gallery: Scoping out the latest functionality enhancements on Apple’s recently announced web browser Safari 5 is, if nothing else, going to be an aesthetically pleasing experience. An email sent out to registered developers today reminded them to submit their Safari 5 extensions to be considered for AAPL’s Safari Extensions Gallery. The gallery will be “a new destination to increase the visibility of your Safari extension beyond your website” and its “one-click installation feature will allow users to seamlessly install extensions from a developer website without ever having to leave the Gallery.” Good news for entrepreneurial developers looking for a boost and good for Safari users who obsess over incorporating as much tech into their Apple system as possible.

BMW to Support iOS iPod/iPhone 4 Out: One of the numerous new features of AAPL’s new mobile operating system iOS 4 is the iPod Out function. It allows users with an iPod Touch or iPhone 4 to access a specialized and full-featured video display control panel in an automobile that supports it. BMW announced in a YouTube video posted this morning that starting next year BMWs and Minis will both support iPod Out functionality.  The video states that BMW’s technology staff has spent three years incorporating iOS into the “automotive experience” of driving a BMW. Hopefully it’ll be easier to browse your library while weaving in and out of traffic with iPod Out than it is with a regular old iPod plugged into that failing tape deck in your ’84 735i.
