Wednesday’s Apple Rumors — The Price of Peace

Here are your Apple rumors and news items for Wednesday:

Price of Peace: Detusche Bank analyst Kai Korschelt shed more light on just how much Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will be paying Nokia (NYSE:NOK) following the settlement of their patent legislation. Based on previous patent-related settlements and royalties, Korschelt believes that Apple will have to pay Nokia a one-time fee of approximately $608 million and a fee of almost $138 million each quarter afterward. Morgan Stanley analyst Patrick Standaert told ZDNet said that even though the license fees give Nokia “indirect exposure to Apple’s success,” winning this battle will not ultimately help them to win the smartphone war.

BBC Live: A Tuesday report at Journalism.co.uk (via Apple Insider) said that the BBC is developing an iPhone and iPad app specifically for reporters in the broadcasting company’s employ. The new app will allow them to upload video, audio, and pictures directly to the BBC while in the field. BBC’s head of newsgathering Martin Turner said that he and his reporters are using the iPhone because of the combination of useful reporting tools. The internally used live reporting app will be deployed by July.

Wireless Charging?: A Wednesday report at TUAW detailing a newly published Apple patent suggests that iPhone and iPad users won’t need to plug in their handhelds for a battery recharge in the future. The “Wireless power utilization in a local computing environment” patent describes a near field magnetic resonance technology that would allow an iPhone or similar device to be charged if it is within three feet of a PC that is plugged into an electrical outlet.
