Tuesday’s Apple Rumors — Supply Side

Here are your Apple rumors and news items for Tuesday:

15 Million Strong: A Bloomberg report reiterated the commonly held belief that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will introduce a new iPhone in September. If that’s accurate, Apple stands a good chance of avoiding the supply shortages that have marked all new iPhone releases since 2008. The company has placed an order with Taiwanese manufacturer Pegatron to assemble 15 million smartphones — named the iPhone 5 in the report—to ship in September. While supply handily met demand when Apple released a new iPhone for Verizon’s (NYSE:VZ) network in February, the release of that model last summer on AT&T’s (NYSE:T) network saw consumers waiting weeks to receive preorders.

1% of Everything: A new report from research firm Net Applications provides one more feather in the cap of Apple’s iPad business. After 15 months on the market, the iPad now accounts for 1% of all web-browsing across all Internet-connected devices in the world. This is “53 times the usage share of its nearest competitor,” Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. The iPad actually places third among mobile devices in terms of usage share, with almost 26% of all mobile web-browsing taking place on the device, compared to nearly 32% on Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android devices and more than 35% on the iPhone.

New 4G Toys: Apple, Google, and a number of other technology companies recently spent a collective $4.5 billion on acquiring the intellectual property of Nortel (PINK:NRTLQ). A Sunday report at Mac Rumors said Apple is now the sole owner of Nortel’s 4G LTE patents (LTE is the standard for 4G mobile networks used by Verizon and AT&T). Apple reportedly paid $2 billion to gain complete control of the patents. Apple is not expected to release an LTE-compatible iPhone until 2012.
