Fantastic Friday: In the first 24 hours that Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) new iPhone 5 was available for online pre-orders, the company sold 2 million units, the Associated Press notes. The first batch of iPhone 5’s sold out in just an hour. The rapid sales pace was more than twice that recorded for the iPhone 4S, which launched last October. Apple wasn’t the only company setting records with the iPhone 5, AT&T (NYSE:T), which was the iPhone’s first U.S. carrier, said it set a sales record for iPhone sales on Friday and over the weekend. The phone will hit brick and mortar stores nationwide on Friday. iPhone devotees have already begun camping outside some stores to be first in line. Analysts noted that the lack of sufficient pre-order supplies indicate that Apple misjudged the extent of demand for the new phone. iPhones ordered online after the first batch will not reach consumers until October 5, at the earliest. Some analysts have speculated that Apple could sell as many as 10 million iPhone 5’s before the end of September.
A6 Specs Guessed: While Apple did not reveal the amount of RAM included with the iPhone 5 at last week’s debut, technology analysts scrutinizing the A6 chip that powers the handset have determine that it likely has 1GB of RAM, AppleInsider notes. That would be twice the RAM in the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 models. Analysts also speculate that the A6 process contains a CPU core designed by Apple itself to meet the iPhone 5’s specific needs. If so, that represents a change from the standard A-series chips used in previous iPhones.
Lightning Changes: The smaller docking connector that comes with the iPhone 5 isn’t merely a change in connector styles, but the beginning of the end for smartphone docks, BusinessWeek notes. Apple abandoned its 30-pin dock connector in favor of the new, smaller connector, but iPhones haven’t needed to physically connect to a computer to sync with iTunes since the release of iOS 5, now using Wi-Fi connections instead. The iPhone can also exchange data via iCloud without a physical connection. Wireless connections are also debuting on speaker systems that once had iPhone docks, meaning that physical connections won’t be needed for that much longer either. While Apple calls the new, smaller dock Lightning, in fact, the only purpose such connections may serve in the near future is charging the battery.
