California’s First Cellphone Amber Alerts Create Controversy

Some Californians are happy about receiving Amber Alerts via text messages.

The state got its first Amber Alert text message Monday night, warning people about two children that had been abducted. Amber Alerts use a different type of sound than the average text message. Instead of a normal ringtone the phone screeches and buzzes loudly.

Many people weren’t happy about getting the Amber Alerts on their phones.

One comment on the Amber Alert Facebook (FB) page reads “I did NOT appreciate the amber alert that just buzzed my cell phone and scared the crap out of me at 11:58pm PST.”

Another

Facebook user was also unhappy about the alert.

“Ok so lets get this straight. They don’t want us to have our phones in our hands while driving so they send us a loud annoying sound to our phones to make us look at them. Oh and what good is an amber alert going to do while I’m at work. And when did the government take over my phone.”

The comments sections of articles covering the Amber Alert also have people that were angered by the message.

“My iPhone 5 is set to “sleep” at 10pm, so I can get some sleep without being disturbed by some stupid message.”

One Twitter user advised people on how to shut the alerts off.

“If you’re outraged by the irritation of receiving an Amber Alert on your phone, there’s a switch under Settings to disable your heart.”

Not everyone was annoyed by the Amber Alert, and many were happy to receive it.

“AMEN for the alerts,” “I think the cell phone notifications are wonderful but we should be notified when they are cancelled as well,” and “Sorry I have a 5 year old and I would want everyones phone blowing up if my baby was missin,”  are just some of the positive comments on Amber Alert’s Facebook page.
