Microsoft Matches PS4 With 1M First-Day Xbox One Sales

Many retailers are now out of stock

xboxONEGamers eagerly snapped up Microsoft’s (MSFT) next generation video gaming console, which hit U.S. stores on Friday.

The software and technology giant announced that it sold more than one million Xbox One units during the first 24 hours after the console launched in 13 markets. According to Microsoft, the console has proven so popular that many retailers have exhausted their initial inventories, the Associated Press notes.

Launch sales for the Xbox One matched the one million PlayStation 4 consoles that Sony (SNE) says it sold during the first day of its release.

Adding a bit of color to the sales data, Microsoft noted that gamers had used the Xbox One to slaughter more than 60 million zombies via the Dead Rising 3 game. Microsoft indicated that the Xbox One sales had topped those generated by the Xbox 360 during the first day of its launched eight years earlier.

After showing off the Xbox One at a gaming conference earlier this year, Microsoft received considerable criticism its requirement for an always-on Internet connection and constraints on used-games. Responding to the backlash, the company made changes to assuage irate gamers.

In August, Microsoft announced that employees who worked on the development of the Xbox One, would receive free white-case versions of the new console.

Shares of Microsoft rose modestly in Monday morning trading.
