A recent report that claims China has banned officials from buying Apple (AAPL) products isn’t exactly true.

Apple products aren’t specifically on a ban list in China and instead they just never made a list of approved products. The list was a collection of energy-efficient devices that officials could buy using public money, reports AppleInsider.

The exact reason for Apple not being included on the list of energy-efficient devices that can be bought by government officials is unknown. However, it could be that the tech giant just failed to fill out paperwork to make it on the list. It could also have been a filing error on the government’s part, AppleInsider notes.

Some believe there is a different reason that Apple didn’t make the list.

“When the government stops the procurement of products, it sends a signal to corporates and semi-government bodies,” Mark Po, a UOB Kay Hian analyst, told Bloomberg. “The Chinese government wants to make sure that overseas companies shouldn’t have too much influence in China.”
