A 2011 blog post claimed that Apple would try to move away from Intel’s x86 chips in the next few years. The blog speculated that the tech giant will instead start using its own ARM processor in all of its devices, reports Fortune.

Jean-Louis Gassée, who took over Mac development in 1985, didn’t used to be a believer in Apple being able to use its own processors, but things have changed. Now Gassée believes it’s possible that the company will try to own “all layers of the stack” concerning the technology the company uses, Fortune notes.

Apple switching to its own chips rather than using Intel’s could bring several benefits to the company. First off, the change would likely allow the company to sell Macs cheaper as it wouldn’t be shelling out anywhere from $300 to almost $400 for an Intel i7 processor. Another benefit would be the reduced power consumption of the ARM chips when compared to their Intel counterparts, reports Quartz.
