Egg Prices Set to Skyrocket in 2015

Egg prices are expected to increase in 2015 due to a law passed in California.

A new law going into effect in California requires egg farmers to expand the cage sizes for their chickens. The law requires pens to be big enough for chickens to flap their wings and stretch. However, this could cost egg farms millions to remodel their chicken coops, which would in turn increase egg prices, reports The New York Times.

The increase in egg prices will likely affect everyone as California’s chicken cage law will reach other states. Prices could go up this year and return to normal relatively soon while still remaining higher in California, or they could stay high for everyone, NYT

notes.

“The sad reality is consumers don’t really know where their food comes from,” Chad Gregory, president of United Egg Producers, told Dayton Daily News. “What they think farming should look like is not a realistic picture if you want to provide a good and affordable source of food to 315 million people.”
