The top food trends for 2015 include artisan items, gourmet products and lots of pickles.
National Restaurant Association compiled six of the year’s expected food trends based on its ‘What’s Hot’ culinary forecast. Here’s the full selection:
- House-Made Items: Restaurants are focusing on artisan offerings that use organic ingredients from local gardens and farms. Cheese, bacon and beer are among the homegrown menu items you should expect to see in restaurants.
- Environmental Sustainability: Food waste reduction and management has improved in the food industry recently. This trend should continue growing this year.
- Diversity: The food industry realizes that variety is the spice of life and Americans seem more interested than ever in trying new things. Fusion cuisine and ethnic ingredients will add a little diversity to restaurants.
- Healthier Kids’ Menus: Chicken fingers, hot dogs and grilled cheese make up your typical children’s menu but this trend is changing in 2015. Expect to see more whole grains, veggies and oven-baked items for kids.
- Pickles: Restaurants are experimenting with pickles using ethnic flavors and specialty vinegars. The move could also see a rise in pickle-based dishes.
- Decline of Certain Specialty Items: Cronuts and other hybrid desserts are not as popular as they once were. Gluten-free items and Greek yogurt fever is also slowing down.
