Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (NYSE:CMG) is officially a GMO-free restaurant starting today.

chipotle-gmo-free-gmo-cmgThis change means that Chipotle restaurants no longer use ingredients that are genetically modified. It’s move toward being a GMO-free restaurant means that its tortillas, rice, chips, salsa, marinades and corn aren’t genetically modified, reports CNNMoney.

The pork and chicken used in Chipotle’s food still comes from animals that eat GMO-modified food, but the animals themselves aren’t altered genetically. The company has gone the furthest of all fast-food chains to become GMO-free. It even switched from using soybean oil to GMO-free sunflower oil for cooking, CNNMoney notes.

“This is another step toward the visions we have of changing the way people think about and eat fast food,” Steve Ells, founder and co-CEO of Chipotle, told The New York Times. “Just because food is served fast doesn’t mean it has to be made with cheap raw ingredients, highly processed with preservatives and fillers and stabilizers and artificial colors and flavors.”

CMG shares were up slightly as of Monday afternoon.
