Washington, DC was hit by a series of power outages Tuesday.

These were caused by a fire at a power substation in southern Maryland. Here are five things to know about it:

  • A small explosion led to the fire and it was most likely an accident, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Firefighters extinguished the fire soon after and no injuries were reported.
  • Washington, DC’s public transit rail system and government buildings — including the White House — were affected by it.
  • 2,000 customers were inconvenienced by the power outages.
  • Pepco — Washington’s major electric utility — is investigating and attempting to solve the problem.
