Washington, DC was hit by a series of power outages Tuesday.
These were caused by a fire at a power substation in southern Maryland. Here are five things to know about it:

- Firefighters extinguished the fire soon after and no injuries were reported.
- Washington, DC’s public transit rail system and government buildings — including the White House — were affected by it.
- 2,000 customers were inconvenienced by the power outages.
- Pepco — Washington’s major electric utility — is investigating and attempting to solve the problem.
