There’s a doomsday seed vault located in the Svalbard archipelago.
The doomsday seed vault is called the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. The seed vault is located in the side of a mountain. This location allows seeds in the vault to undergo natural permafrost, which means they will be protected from disasters even if power to the facility is cut.
The doomsday seed vault’s location also makes it accessible without being too close to civilization. It acts as a backup where more than 2.5 billion seeds from 4.5 million different types of crops can be stored. The vault is set up so that only countries that donate seeds can pull those same seeds back out for use.
The doomsday seed vault is already serving its purpose. The war in Syria has resulted in the country having to pull seeds from the vault that it had deposited earlier. This is the first time that seeds have been taken from the vault since it was opened in 2008, reports Time.
