Study: Scented Candles, Air Fresheners Pose Cancer Risk

A new study claims that scented candles and air fresheners have a chance of causing cancer and other negative conditions on the body.

scented-candles-air-freshenersAccording to the study, scented candles can release acetone, benzene and toluene and other dangerous chemicals into the air. These chemicals are similar to ones released by diesel engines and are known carcinogens. The candles also contain formaldehyde and can cause respiratory issues after long exposure to them. The negative chemicals can also be absorbed through the skin by touching the candles, reports Daily Mail.

The study also found that air fresheners can cause a lot of negative effects on the body. These include lung damage, asthma, cancer, hormone changes, sore throats, nose bleeds and more. Incense is also potentially dangerous with some chemicals released by burning it being worse for the body than tobacco smoke, Daily Mail notes.

Fans of scented candles don’t have to give them up altogether. Instead, they can look for safe alternatives. This includes soy candles and beeswax candles. Beeswax candles don’t put toxins in the air, but they are more expensive than traditional scented candles, which contain paraffin, reports Wellness Mama.
