New Super Stonehenge Found in Britain

Archaeologists have discovered a new ancient temple just a couple miles away from Stonehenge.

Stonehenge

The ancient temple that was discovered near Stonehenge was found with radar technology that could see what was lying underground. The temple is shaped like a horseshoe and part of it was made up of at least 200 stones. These stones stood three meters tall and were 1.5 meters in width, reports The Independent.

Archaeologists suggests that this super Stonehenge temple was deliberately destroyed as part of a shift in religion in the country. The temple reportedly stopped being used when people of the era switched to a solar religion. It’s likely that many of its stones were dug up and pushed over on purpose as part of this shift, The Independent notes.

“We’re looking at one of the largest stone monuments in Europe and it has been under our noses for something like 4,000 years,” Vince Gaffney, the chairman in Landscape Archaeology and Geomatics at the University of Birmingham, told Discovery News

. “We don’t think there’s anything quite like this anywhere else in the world. This is completely new and the scale is extraordinary.”
