The World Health Organisation (WHO) has linked bacon, sausage, hot dogs and other red meats to cancer.
WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) examined roughly 800 studies to reach the result that processed red meats are linked to cancer. The organization specifically linked red meats to bowel cancer, but there is a possibility that it could also be connected to pancreatic, prostate and stomach cancer, reports Reuters.
After looking over the studies WHO moved red meats to group 1 as a cancer risk. This group also contains tobacco and asbestos. However, it doesn’t compare the risks of developing cancer from different substances in a group, which means it isn’t saying that red meat is as likely to cause caner as tobacco or other carcinogens, Reuters notes.
“We’ve always known, processed meats – too much is bad. Processed meats aren’t good for blood pressure, have a slight increase in colon cancer risk, potentially a slight increase in prostate and pancreatic cancer [risk],” Dr. David Agus, a cancer specialists, told CBS News
. “They’re very small. But the key is what grandma used to say: moderation.”
