Concern over Zika Virus has continued to spread with the start of the 2016 Summer Olympics at Rio.

Zika Virus, Symptoms

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Zika Virus symptoms don’t always show up and when they do they’re usually very mild. This means that those living in, or visiting, affected areas should take special care of the virus.

Here are the symptoms of Zika Virus.

  • Fever
  • Rash
  • Joint Pain
  • Conjunctivitis (Red Eyes)

Zika Virus symptoms can also include muscle pain and headaches. The symptoms can last for several days to a week. They can be hard to spot and many that get infected don’t become ill enough to seek hospital treatment.

Individuals infected with Zika Virus rarely die. The virus is spread through mosquito bites and can remain in the blood of an infected person for roughly one week. A urine or blood test can be used to determine if someone has the virus, but there is no medicine for it.

Those that are infected by Zika Virus are more likely to be resistant to it in the future if bitten by a mosquito carrying it. Travelers that have been to an area where the virus is found are advised to see a doctor to determine if they have it.

Zika Virus can be transferred from men to women during sex. A pregnant woman can also pass the virus on to her unborn child. This can occur during pregnancy or at the time of delivery. Children infected with the virus during pregnancy can be inflicted with microcephaly and other defects.
