Hurricane Matthew 2016: Where It’s Headed — and When

Hurricane Matthew could be hitting part of the East Coast this weekend.

The tropical storm is expected to be potent throughout its Caribbean journey in which it will hit Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Cuba and more. The strength of Hurricane Matthew will fluctuate over the days, but it is still unclear how much damage it will deal.

The storm is moving north, about 275 miles southwest of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince. It is gathering strength and slowly rising into a Category 4 hurricane.

Sustained winds will be at 39 mph or higher, beginning its trajectory in Jamaica early on Monday. Then, it will hit Haiti and the Dominican Republic late on Monday and early Tuesday.

Hurricane Matthew’s trajectory will then be in Eastern Cuba Tuesday and Tuesday night, followed by southeast and central Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday night.

Depending on how the storm moves, it could take a ride in the U.S. coastal areas, including Miami, other parts of southeastern Florida, as well as several cities in the Carolinas such as Charleston and Morehead City.It may also reach southeast Virginia before petering out, failing to reach the rest of the East Coast. It is still unclear where Hurricane Matthew will land exactly so it’d be wise to check the forecast over the coming four days to see whether or not you will be affected.
