Walt Disney Co World Closing Parks Due to Hurricane Matthew

Walt Disney CoWalt Disney Co World (NYSE:DIS) is shuttering its doors in anticipation of Hurricane Matthew.

The famous theme park is closed to the public on Thursday, October 6 for only the fourth time in its storied history. Naturally, the decision was made in anticipation of the tropical storm that could potentially cause some damage in Florida, as well as North Carolina and South Carolina.

Most of the East Coast will not feel the full rage of Hurricane Matthew, but Florida is facing a serious weather warning following the devastation caused by the storm in Haiti and the rest of the Caribbean.

In the 45 years that the park has been around, it has only closed four times–in 1999 for Hurricane Floyd, in 1999 for Hurricane Frances for two days, in 2004 for Hurricane Jeanne and today.

9/11 was also a cause for distress in Walt Disney World as the park was evacuated due to the event becoming a national warning. A spokeswoman for the company commented on the closing, noting that the most recent forecasts of Hurricane Matthew led to the decision to the park shutting down until the weather improves.

This move applies to Walt Disney World theme parks, water parks, Disney Springs, miniature golf courses, as well as ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. All of these will be closed today by 5 p.m. and remain closed through tomorrow, Friday, October 7.

DIS shares surged 0.6% today.
