The holiday honors those who have served our country over the years, remembering the sacrifices they made to defend the U.S. Here are eight things to know about it:

  • World War I formally ended on November 11th at the 11th hour, which is on the 11th month of the year. Veterans Day is celebrated Friday, November 11 this year.
  • It was originally known as Armistice Day, and it honored those who died in World War I. Woodrow Wilson declared it as such in 1919, but it was changed in 1940. The first national holiday celebrating the day took place in 1947.
  • Memorial Day honors those who have died in service, while Veterans Day honors all veterans, dead or alive.
  • The day is borth a state and federal holiday in the U.S.
  • There are approximately 24 million veterans alive today.
  • A ceremony takes place in Arlington Cemetery every year to honor those who have died in war.
  • In 2011, it was estimated that approximately 8.1% of members of the military are women.
  • About 35% of veterans today are known for the service the offered the country during the Vietnam War.
