What is the mannequin challenge?
There is a new trend taking the Internet by storm and it’s called the mannequin challenge. Completing it is very simple–all you have to do is get a group of people together and pose in a dramatic manner while rotating the camera.
The mannequin challenge was started by high school students at the Edward H. White High School in Jacksonville, Florida, who struck a series of inquisitive and moving poses.
An essential element of the new trend is that a certain song has to be playing in the background while you are taking part in it–hip hop duo Rae Sremmurd’s new song “Black Beatles” should be playing in the background.
The group itself took part in the mannequin challenge by posting a video that captured a moving image of Rae Sremmurd performing, except everyone was frozen in position, including the crowd.
An Instagram search for #MannequinChallenge had more than 56,000 searches as of Monday morning. Some really went all out with the challenge by doing more difficult poses, including cheerleaders who raised each other high while the camera moved.
A number of sports teams joined in the fun, including the Milwaukee Bucks and the Pittsburgh Steelers–the latter of which chose to do their mannequin challenge on a plane.
It is not clear what exactly the song and movement means.
