Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG,NASDAQ:GOOGL) is making some changes to its Google Drive app.

Google DriveThe tech giant will be eliminating the software and replacing it with an improved version of it. Here are five things you should know about the shift:

  • Alphabet announced that those with the Google Drive software will have until March 12, 2018 to switch to an alternative if they’d like to keep their important files backed up.
  • The app will actually stop working on Dec. 11, 2017, before shutting down all your files three months later.
  • For most customers, the company suggests that users upgrade to the new Google Backup & Sync software. The app has been available since July and it backs up files and folders from a PC or Mac to Google Drive automatically.
  • With this new software, Alphabet will select the contents of your desktop, Documents folder and Pictures folder as the items that it will backup. However, you can change your settings to ensure that only the files in certain locations will be backed up.
  • Alphabet encourages business users to use a different software in the form of Google Drive File Stream, which will launch on Sept. 26. A big difference between the two is the fact that File Stream does not store any files locally, as it chooses to keep them in the cloud at all times. You can then stream these items to your desktop at your convenience.

GOOG stock surged 0.5% Monday, while GOOGL shares gained 0.4%.
