Uber Apologizes for Sexist ‘Wife Appreciation Day’ Promo

Uber has apologized following a “wife appreciation day” promotional offering.

UberThe company was encouraging male workers to bring their significant other to the company’s offices via social media. However, the way the promotional day was worded could’ve been different.

Uber asked husbands to “let your wife take a day off from the kitchen,” painting an archaic image of what male and female relationships look like nowadays. The company should’ve encourage a “take-your-partner to work day” instead of one for wives only.

“Dear husbands, a gentle reminder – today is Wife Appreciation Day,” Uber originally tweeted. The company then apologized, admitting the message was “totally inappropriate. We’ve removed it, and we apologise.”

Twitter has a field day following Uber’s blunder, with @GNUmanth tweeting: “Sorry Uber but why do you think that only the ‘wife’ needs to be at the kitchen!” Other users came down hard on the company, noting that the promo did not stir much attention from anyone, except for negative media attention.

This isn’t the first time Uber has been accused of being sexist as earlier this year, many of its workers spoke out and talked about how some superiors of female workers often made unreciprocated sexual advances at them, and nothing was done once they filed sexual harassment claims.

Moving forward, Uber will have to be more careful about how it promotes itself and its promotions.
