Christmas Eve traditions around the world change drastically depending on where you live. This really isn’t much of a surprise if you think about how the various cultures on the Earth differ from one another. However, it is still interesting to see what others do to celebrate on the day before Christmas.

The following are a few interesting Christmas Eve traditions from around the world.

  • Germany — Some Christmas Eve traditions in Germany include setting up the Christmas tree and decorating it that day. They also typically open most of their presents on Christmas Eve.
  • Mexico — Families come together for dinner on Christmas Eve and then head off to attend Midnight Mass. They also bring poinsettias to the church with them as gifts to Jesus Christ.
  • Venezuela — A strange but interesting Christmas Eve tradition in this country is roller skating to Christmas Mass. The country also celebrates the holiday with fireworks and ringing church bells.
  • Japan — This may seem like a weird one to some, but in Japan it is traditional to eat KFC on Christmas Eve. The chain promoted the holiday heavily in the country and now the two go hand in hand.
  • Australia — Down under they celebrate Christmas Eve by heading out to the beach or going camping. This is due to it being summer in the country when Christmas takes place. Citizens in Australia also enjoy singing Christmas carols by candlelight.
