Apple Inc. (AAPL) Stock News – iPad, iPhone Supply Bottlenecks Over

Here is your daily Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) stock news and rumors for August 20, 2010. Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) subsidiary Time Inc. finally gets its magazines onto the iPad after settling a dispute with Apple. Speaking of the iPad, it appears that Apple is finally producing enough tablets to satisfy demand, and reports indicate that the iPhone 4 should catch up soon.

AAPL Reaches Deal With Magazine Publishers for iPad: Apple and Time Inc. have finally settled their ongoing dispute over magazine access on the iPad. Starting yesterday, subscribers to People magazine can now access a digital edition of the magazine on their iPad at no additional cost. Apple was blocking Time Inc.’s efforts to release digital editions of their magazines on the iPad as recently as the end of July, when Apple halted the release of Sports Illustrated on the tablet computer. At the time, it was thought that Apple was putting up a stink with Time Inc. over how payment for subscriptions would be processed. Time Inc. wanted subscribers to pay them directly for access, while Apple wanted users to have to purchase subscriptions through the app store. Time wanted placement in the app store but didn’t want to yield a percentage of each purchase to APPL. That speculation seems accurate now, as subscriptions must be purchased through Time Inc. and the subscriptions are not available in the app store.

iPad Supply Opens Up, iPhone 4 to Follow Soon: Fortune is reporting that iPad supply is finally starting to catch up with demand, four months after the tablet computer released. Susquehanna Financial analyst Jeff Fidacaro has raised his forecast on both iPad production and shipments in the fourth quarter of 2010. Fidacaro predicts that APPL will ship 4.75 million iPads in the fourth quarter of 2010, a 34% increase over Q3 and he expects Apple to produce some 7 million units, up from 6, in the company’s fiscal fourth quarter. Other evidence that supply is catching up to rabid demand is iPad shipping estimations on APPL’s online store. iPads are now listed as shipping in 3 to 5 business days rather than 7 to 10. Meanwhile, Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar expects iPhone 4 supplies to follow suit by the end of September, giving Apple the chance to sell fifteen million units of the new smartphone by the end of the calendar year.

OS Testing a Prequel to “Unknown Product?”: AppleInsider is reporting that AAPL has begun testing the first major update for its iOS 4.0 operating system. The beta code for i0S 4.1 also seems to indicate plans for Apple Inc.’s rumored new products. In the USB configuration files of iOS 4.1 are three new “Confgiuration Descriptors” for devices that name Apple Inc. as their manufacturer. The first, “iPod 4,1” identified the first edition of a fourth generation device, most likely the all-but-confirmed new iPod Touch expected to launch in September. The second is for likely iPad update “iProd 2,1.” Before it’s release in April, the iPad’s descriptor in iOS’ code was “iProd 1,1.” Finally, there is a listing in the code labeled “unknownHardware.” AppleInsider speculates that this could refer to the rumored new Apple TV, iTV, which is said to jettison OS X in favor of the iOS operating system. A screenshot of the code can be seen here.
