Apple Inc. (AAPL) Rumors – Verizon 4G iPhone Update

Here is your daily Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) stock news and rumors for September 23, 2010. Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg told investors that he’s hoping AAPL has a certain smartphone for the launch of his telecom company’s new 4G LTE network. Meanwhile, one analyst is expecting a whole lot more iPads to sell than he initially expected. Finally, APPL CEO Steve Jobs is named one of the richest men in America.

Verizon Wants APPL iPhone for Its 4G Network: Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg has been deflecting rumors of a Verizon iPhone for months, shooting down rumor after rumor about 2010 launches for a CDMA iPhone and others about a Verizon-supported next-generation iPhone from the Cupertino, California company. At the same time, though, Seidenberg has made more than a few hints that Verizon has laid the groundwork for Apple’s smartphone through its work with other manufacturers like Research in Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) and Motorola (NYSE: MOT). Last January, Seidenberg told investors that Verizon’s 3G network was ready for the iPhone then and there. This week, the CEO told investors that he “hopes” AAPL will build a brand new iPhone that is compatible with the telecom giant’s new 4G long-term evolution (LTE) network. The Associated Press reports that Seidenberg made these comments without mentioning the oft-rumored CDMA Verizon iPhone, lending credence to Kauffman Bros. analyst Shaun Wu’s recent comments that Verizon and APPL will forego a CDMA device in favor of more advanced technology. Verizon’s 4G LTE network is set to launch by the end of 2010. Maybe Seidenberg will be revealing a Verizon iPhone during his keynote at CES 2011 after all.

Analyst Ups Predicted 2011 iPad Sales to 21 Million: Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is impressed with Apple Inc. and its iPad tablet computer. Munster is so impressed in fact that he’s raised his prediction of Apple’s 2011 iPad sales from 14.5 million to 21 million, leading the device to outsell Mac computers by a wide margin. Citing the iPad’s release in nearly twenty countries over the past six months, coupled with increased supply and interest from enterprise customers, Munster says that the iPad will become both a primary and secondary computing device for many purchasers next year. “We see the iPad as the Mac for the masses.” Apple released the iPad in 5 South American countries in September in addition to releasing a WiFi-only model in China. Big box retail chain Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) also recently announced that they would begin selling the iPad at all of its stores in the United States. Given the iPad’s reach and popularity, Munster’s predictions don’t seem outlandish.

APPL CEO Steve Jobs Named 42nd Richest Man in America: Forbes magazine has published its 2010 Rich List profiling the 400 richest citizens in the United States and the rest of the world. Apple Inc.’s once-and-current king Steve Jobs was named the 42nd richest man in the country with a net worth of $6.1 billion. While AAPL has earned Jobs much of his fortune, the majority comes from Disney (NYSE: DIS); Jobs owns some $4.4 billion in Disney stock at this time. Jobs is also the co-founder of Disney’s massively successful computer animation studio, Pixar. A fair number of technologists placed much higher on the list than Jobs though. The 26-year-old Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg came in at #35, while Google Inc.’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) Larry Page and Sergey Brin tied for the 11th spot. Then, of course, is Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) creative head Bill Gates sitting at number 1 with a net worth of $54 billion.
