Thursday Apple Rumors: iOS 6 Maps App Draws Complaints

daily apple rumors AAPLHere are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:

Map Gripes: With iOS 6 now released, users have discovered Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) new maps app, and many don’t like it, BoyGeniusReport notes. Apple dumped Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) map program from the backend of iOS earlier this year, in favor of a map solution developed in-house. Critics say that Apple’s map program doesn’t measure up to Google’s, which has been refined over a number of years. The new Maps app has been called “awful” and “an unsightly blemish on what is otherwise a beautiful OS.” Early testers of the app had hoped Apple would improve it before the debut of iOS 6, but critics say the program that came with the new OS, which debuted yesterday, falls woefully short.

And the Lawsuits Continue: Samsung says it intends to add the iPhone 5 to a separate lawsuit against Apple, claiming that the latest iPhone, which hits stores tomorrow, infringes on its patents, the Wall Street Journal notes. Last month, a California jury found that Samsung violated Apple patents in its smartphones and awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages. Samsung’s separate lawsuit against Apple is not scheduled to reach a court until 2014, and the addition of the newest iPhone is unlikely to have any impact on its sales.

Face Locking: Apple has filed applications for patents with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office today covering technology that allows users to lock and unlock devices with automatic facial recognition, AppleInsider notes. The new technology differs from other facial recognition locking programs by using facial recognition to initiate the process. Apple’s technology would allow a device to lock itself once the user’s face was no longer visible in the front camera view, and unlock itself once the face is visible again.
