According to The Hollywood Reporter, Channing Tatum will appear in a spinoff that focuses just on Gambit. Before this, he will appear in the sequel to X-Men: Days of Future Past, titled X-Men: Apocalypse. The news of Channing Tatum as Gambit was first revealed by X-Men producerLauren Shuler Donner at the premiere of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

The Gambit spinoff movie doesn’t yet have a director attached to it and it’s still in development. Shuler said she wanted Channing Tatum for the role of Gambit because he is “ a rascal,” The Hollywood Reporter notes.

Gambit is a mutant that has the ability to control kinetic energy. This allows him to build up energy in an object and cause it to explode. His signature weapons are trading cards, which he throws after filling them with kinetic energy, and a bo staff. He is a professional thief that was born in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Gambit first appeared in the X-Men film series in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He was played by  Taylor Kitsch in this film.

According to E!, fan reaction to Channing Tatum being cast as Gambit isn’t as bad as it could have been. It rated fan anger at a six out of 10. Other super hero castings, such as Ben Affleck as Batman and Heath Ledger as the Joker, scored much higher.
