The Jewish New Year, called “Rosh Hashana” is in full swing.
Rosh Hashana 2015 started on Sunday evening and will last until Tuesday evening. The event rings in the Jewish New Year on the Hebrew calendar and its name translates to “head of the year.” It is also the start of the High Holy Days, which includes Yom Kippur and the days in between the two holidays, reports Penn Live.
Rosh Hashana is celebrated by having family’s come together for dinner, reflect on themselves and prayer. There is also a meeting at local synagogues to celebrate the Jewish New Year. There are several other customs that are included in the holiday, such as sounding a horn made from a ram, and the basic greeting during this time is “L’shanah tovah,” which means “to a good year,” Penn Live notes.
After the Jewish New Year comes to an end, Jews will wait for a few days before celebrating Yom Kippur. Follow the link to learn more about this holiday.
