The Real ID Act is about to go into affect and it will require some Americans to have passports to travel by air in the U.S.
The Real ID Act’s passport requirement affects the states of New York, New Hampshire, Louisiana and Minnesota. It also affects American Samoa. The act was passed following 9/11, but was set so that it wouldn’t go into effect sooner than 2016, reports In Homeland Security.
Passports aren’t the only option for people that will be affected by the Real ID Act. They can also obtain passport cards, DHS trusted cards and Enhanced Driver’s Licenses in some states. A military or government employee ID will also work, In Homeland Security notes.
According to the New York Post, the five areas selected are requiring an extra form of identification, such as a passport, for air travel due to a lack of security features on state-issued IDs. However, it’s possible that the Real ID Act won’t be as harsh as people think and that they will still be able to use their state ID’s for travel.
