HB2 Repeal: North Carolina to Undo ‘Bathroom’ Law

North Carolina is repealing its HB2 law that created a further divide between the LGBTQ community and everyone else.

HB2The state’s move was deemed controversial as soon as it was enacted because it does not protect gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in public bathrooms located in the Southern state.

The law ensured that the bathroom people used had to correspond with the sex of their birth, drawing criticism from transgender people who identify as a different sex from their birth gender.

Plenty of people sought to repeal the HB2 law as soon as it was enacted. Additionally, a slate of musicians cancelled shows from their tours that would take place in North Carolina due to the bill.

Governor-elect Ray Cooper helped to repeal the law, then said HB2 would also be repealed in the General Assembly. Charlotte had laws that were anti-HB2 as the city made businesses offer their bathrooms based on gender identity.

The former law also blocked municipalities from adopting their own anti-discrimination rules. “I hope they will keep their word to me and with the help of Democrats in the legislature, HB2 will be repealed in full,” said Cooper.
