California has passed a law that bans the use of plastic bags from grocery stores.
Gov. Jerry Brown passed a legislation to do so on Tuesday. Here are five things you should know about the California plastic bag ban:
- Single-use plastic bags will no longer be carried by grocers.
- Shoppers must now bring their own reusable bag or pay ten cents for a paper bag.
- The move is meant to reduce pollution in “beaches, parks and even the vast ocean itself,” according to Gov. Brown.
- The American Progressive Bag Alliance is rallying to overturn the law via referendum on the 2016 ballot.
- The group believes the law is a scam concocted by grocers and union bosses to rob consumers out of billions of dollars.
