Quick Refresh: While Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) unveiled its fourth-generation 9.7-inch iPad just yesterday, the company may introduce another update for the standard-sized iPad early next year, AppleInsider notes. The prediction comes from a KGI Securities analyst who predicts that competition from Microsoft‘s (NASDAQ:MSFT) new Surface tablets will force Apple to increase the speed with which debuts updates to the iPad. The analyst predicts that next year’s iPad will be thinner and lighter than current models. The fourth-generation iPad unveiled at a media event on Tuesday retains the same price and features of the third-generation model it replaces, but adds a faster processor and Apple’s new Lightning connector. An updated version will likely use GF2 display technology to reduce the weight and thickness of the device.

Resale Frenzy: Shortly after Apple debuted an updated standard-sized iPad and the new iPad Mini yesterday, 140,000 older iPads were put up for sale on Gazelle.com, a popular electronics reselling website, MarketWatch noted. That represented a 700% jump in Apple device listings over the previous day. Other reselling websites reported similar spikes in Apple device listings prior to and just after the announcement. Roughly 70% of the devices put up for sale yesterday were iPad 3s. The updated 9.7-inch-iPad and the new iPad Mini will hit stores on November 2.

Hefty Share: iPhones accounted for 77% of all smartphones activated by AT&T (NYSE:Tduring the third quarter, MacRumors notes. The wireless carrier activated 6.1 million smartphones during the quarter; 4.7 million of those were iPhones. That represented an increase of one million iPhones compared to the second quarter. iPhones comprised 62% of all phones sold by the company. AT&T reported slower-than-expected subscriber growth last quarter, attributing that to a constrained supply of iPhone 5s. The iPhone 5 debuted last month, but has experienced shipping delays and low inventories due to manufacturing difficulties reportedly encountered by Apple’s Asian suppliers.
