Google GlassReports that Chinese search engine giant Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) was developing a video-enhanced set of glasses, to rival Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) much talked-about Google Glass project, were mostly an April Fool’s Joke. However, the company now says it actually is working on a related technology.

A spokesperson for Baidu has confirmed to TechCrunch that the company is, in fact, working on a eye-based interface that uses an LED screen. The project is described as “a small internal test” of technology that combines a visual image search with voice commands.

While Baidu appears to be in the very early stages of development, the spokesperson noted that the technology was consistent with the company’s technology development strategies. Baidu has not decided whether actually build the device, nor has any manufacturing partner been selected.

Google recently selected 8,000 contestants from an online contest to become the first people to buy its new $1,500 pair of high-tech glasses, which feature a camera and LCD screen.

Shares of both Google and Baidu slipped slightly in midday trading on Wednesday.
