5 Worst Sectors to Avoid This Week

On the Portfolio Grader database this week, the reit, metals and mining, water utilities, energy services and independent utilities sectors are among the worst.

The reit sector looks weak, with 81% of its stocks (125 out of 155) rated a “sell”. Hatteras Financial (HTS), DDR Corp. (DDR) and Health Care REIT, Inc. (HCN) are pushing the sector down with F grades. Over the last 12 months, Hatteras Financial is the worst performer in this sector, with a 30.4% decline.

The metals and mining sector is lagging this week with 67% of its stocks (61 out of 91) rated a “sell”. Newmont Mining Corporation (NEM), Gold Fields Limited Sponsored ADR (GFI) and Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. Class A (SCHN) are all currently earning F’s. Over the last 12 months, Gold Fields Limited Sponsored ADR is the worst performer in this sector, with a 74.4% decline.

The water utilities sector is trailing behind others this week, with 67% of its stocks (4 out of 6) rated a “sell”. Among water utilities stocks, Companhia de Saneamento Basico do Estado de Sao Paulo SABESP Sponsored ADR (SBS), SJW Corp. (SJW) and Aqua America, Inc. (WTR) are lingering near the bottom with grades of D. Companhia de Saneamento Basico do Estado de Sao Paulo SABESP Sponsored ADR is performing worst overall in the sector, with an 81.7% decline over the last 12 months.

With 60% of its stocks (38 out of 63) rated “sell,” the energy services sector is struggling this week. McDermott International, Inc. (MDR), ION Geophysical Corporation (IO) and Tidewater (TDW) are dragging down the sector overall, each earning a low grade of F. The worst performer in this sector is McDermott International, Inc., which saw its price sink 28.5% in the last 12 months.

The independent utilities sector is dragging, with 60% of its stocks (6 out of 10) rated a “sell”. With an overall grade of F, TransAlta Corporation (TAC), Empresa Nacional de Electricidad S.A. Sponsored ADR (EOC) and Calpine Corporation (CPN) are weighing down the sector. Overall, TransAlta Corporation is the poorest performer in this sector. Its share price has dropped 41.7% in the last 12 months.
