A new report suggests that a huge share of Twitter (TWTR) accounts don’t actually send Tweets.

TWTR twitterThere are about 974 million TWTR accounts in existence. However, analysis by Twopcharts indicates that approximately 44% of TWTR accounts have never been used to send Twitter messages known as Tweets. Twopcharts data only tracks tweeting-activity from TWTR accounts, not log-in activity, the Wall Street Journal notes.

About 30% of Twitter accounts have issued between 1 and 10 Tweets, while just 13% of accounts have sent more than 100 Tweets according to Twopcharts’ data.

TWTR says that during the final quarter of 2013, it had about 241 million active users each month. TWTR considers any account whose user has logged in at least once during the month to be active.

Twitter users don’t have to send Tweets to be considered active and many users see the service as a venue for reading other people’s Tweets on a wide variety of subjects from politics to celebrities.

TWTR stock slipped about 1% in Friday morning trading.
