A UK study shows that eating tomatoes may lower the risk of getting prostate cancer.

Prostate Cancer

Research done by Bristol University suggests that eating more than 10 portions of tomatoes per week could reduce the risk of prostate cancer by close to 20%.

The study examined the diets of 20,000 British men between the ages of 50 and 69. The ones who ate more than 10 portions of tomatoes a week had an 18% reduced risk of getting prostate cancer.

Bristol researchers said these findings need human clinical trials to properly examine them. “”Men should still eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, maintain a healthy weight and stay active,” said one researcher.

The American Cancer Society estimates that 233,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in 2014. Close to 30,000 men will die from the illness.
