The Facebook Safety Check tool determines a user’s location based off of where they are accessing the internet and where they last shared a status from. If it sees they were in an area hit by a natural disaster, it will ask if they are okay. This will update the user’s page to let their friends know they’re okay, reports New York Post.

Facebook users have to choose to activate the Safety Check tool before it will work. The new tool will be available worldwide to all of the social media platform’s users and can be accessed online and through mobile devices, New York Post notes.

Facebook Safety Check will also include a list of friends who were in the disaster area. It will alert users when their friends confirm that they are alright.
