FB News: Facebook to Actively Hunt for Stolen Passwords

Facebook (FB) is upping its security so that it will now start looking for stolen passwords.

fb-facebook-stolen-passwordsFacebook will now scour the internet for postings of stolen passwords and account information. If it spots a user’s information on the web, it will send them an alert next time they get on the social media platform telling them to change their password, reports Forbes.

What’s interesting about this is that Facebook will even match up information that isn’t connected to it. This means that the service could notice that a user has the same name and password for another website as they do for it. This could go a long way for helping protect users with stolen passwords from different websites, Forbes notes.

“The problem of password reuse on multiple websites is endemic and well documented,” Chris Long, a security engineer at Facebook, said in a blog post. “The risks are also clear: if you use the same password on lots of websites, an attacker only has to get your password once to be able to access all of those accounts.”
