Former owners of iPhones have found that not disconnecting the device from iMessage before getting rid of it still left them attached to the service. However, Apple’s new tool allows users to enter their phone numbers to remove the device from the messaging service, reports The Washington Post.

For those who still have an iPhone but are planning to get rid of it, iMessage can be turned off by entering the “Settings” and then the “Messages” section on their iPhone. There will be a  list of options that will include the ability to turn the messaging service off, The Washington Post notes.

If an iMessage user has already switched to a new phone that isn’t with Apple, but still has their old iPhone laying around, they can still turn off the service. All they have to do is put their SIM card back in the iPhone and then turn the service off in the Settings, reports USA Today.
