Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) COO Troy Alstead is taking a leave of absence from the company.

starbucks-corporation-sbuxAlsteads leave from Starbucks will be an extended one and he won’t be paid during it. He will start his leave in March and will give up his current role at the company. Alsteads is set to announce transition plans for his leave during the Jan. 22 quarterly earnings call for the company, reports Reuters.

According to Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, Alsteads’ decision to take an extended leave of absence has nothing to do with his health or the company’s performance in the last quarter. Instead, it’s claimed that he is leaving to spend more time with his family. He planned a similar leave in 2008, but was talked out of it, Reuters notes.

“Troy’s humanity and humility will be missed and we wish him the best,” Schultz told The Seattle Times.

SBUX shares were down 2% as of Friday afternoon.
