According to Mashable, Facebook Messenger will be opened up to third-party apps in the near future. The company is expected to make the announcement at the F8 Developer Conference next week. There are 20 third-party apps that are going to work with Messenger.

Facebook Messenger will likely add support for more third-party apps after the new changes are announced. These changes will likely help the app go from being an add-on to the main Facebook app, to becoming its own service, reports Mashable.

Facebook Messenger has 500 million users. The company has been looking to make the app more “more useful, expressive and delightful.” The addition of third-party apps might do just that.

FB shares were up 2% as of Noon Friday.
