The vernal equinox, which is when the sun lays directly over the Earth’s equator, kicks off the first day of Spring 2015 and it will occur today, March 20, 2015. The event will take place at 6:45 p.m. Eastern Time, reports Washington Post.

The vernal equinox brings some unique events along with it. One such event is that the sun will rise due east and set due west with the horizon. Another feature of the event is that there will be exactly 12 hours of day and night for every latitude. There will also be a Supermoon and solar eclipse today, Washington Post notes.

The Google (NASDAQ:GOOG,NASDAQ:GOOGL) Doodle for today is celebrating the first day of spring. It includes a short video of flowers growing and a bee flying in to land on one of them.
