New Google Password Alert Tool: What It Is, How It Works

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG,NASDAQ:GOOGL) has launched a new security tool called “Google Password Alert”.

google-password-alert-goog-googlGoogle Password Alert is an extension to Google Chrome that is designed to protect a user’s password from phishing attacks. The tool works by alerting users to when they type their Google password into a webpage that is not one of the company’s sign-in pages.

“The most effective phishing attacks can succeed 45 percent of the time, nearly 2 percent of messages to Gmail are designed to trick people into giving up their passwords, and various services across the web send millions upon millions of phishing emails, every day,” Drew Hintz, a Google Security Engineer, and Justin Kosslyn from Google Ideas, said in a blog post.

Google Password Alert remembers a scrambled version of a user’s password. It also doesn’t share that information with any other sources. The new Chrome extension is free to download and also works for Google for Work users.
