The FAA is currently working with three organizations to test specific instances of drone usage and will use this data to possibly make changes to the regulations it released in February. The government agency hopes that it can  reach “safe, widespread UAS integration more quickly by leveraging the resources and expertise of the industry.”

Here are the three focuses of the new drone tests being performed with the FAA’s permission.

  • Visual Line-of-Sight Operations in Urban Areas — CNN will be handling these tests in populated areas.
  • Extended Visual Line-of-Sight Operations in Rural Areas — PrecisionHawk will tests flying drones in remote areas without being able to directly see them.
  • Beyond Visual Line-of-Sight in Rural/Isolated Areas — These test will have BNSF Railroad using drones to inspect rail system infrastructure.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has been very interested in using drones to for delivering packages. However, the FAA’s restrictions have made its  near impossible for the online retailer to do much of anything. It has tested some drones, but approval is also taking a long time. Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG,NASDAQ:GOOGL) has also shown interest is using drones to deliver packages.
